Village of Brooklyn
Recycling Ad Hoc Committee
April 6, 2010 5:30 pm
Attendance: Todd Klahn, Catherine Murray and Nadine Walsten
Meeting called to order at 5:37 pm by Chairperson Walsten. The minutes of
5/21/2009 and 9/23/09 were approved (Klahn/Walsten) . The minutes of 6/19/08
were incorrectly identified as 6/19/09 and were approved last year.
The committee discussed the results of the recycling efforts during the Fall Clean
Up Days, 10/09. Metals and appliances were collected. The salvage vendor
apparently didn’t charge for accepting the freon appliances as the money earned by
the metals collected offset the cost of freon recycling. Pelliterri collected the
electronics at no cost to the Village as we had rented 4 dumpsters from them.
At the Spring Clean Up Days, April 23 to May 2, 2010, we will ask the staff
person on duty to check IDs of those dropping off items, to continue to separate
metals, appliances, and to pull nice furniture aside for a church that collects usable
furniture to be distributed by social service agencies. Because several new cribs
were dropped off last fall, we will recycle them but they must meet standards re:
distance between rails. Very little carpeting was dropped off last fall, but if
carpeting is dropped off this spring, we will have the staff pull that aside so it can
be recycled through Coyle carpeting on the Beltline/Rimrock Rd in Madison.
The Electronics Round Up, co-sponsored with the Rotarians, that was held
on10/120/09, in Oregon at the Holy Mother of Consolation Church, was judged a
success by Resource Solutions. The motion was made/approved (Klahn/Murray)
to co-sponsor another Electronics Round Up on 5/22/10 in the Village Hall parking
lot (pending approval by V. Clerk’s office). We agreed to advertise in all the
surrounding townships and the Rotary will advertise in Oregon village. The
committee agreed to co-sponsor the Oregon October 2010 Round Up as well.
The remaining agenda items will be discussed at the next meeting.
Klahn/Murray moved to adjourn the meeting at 7 pm.
