President's Letter
July, 2010
Nadine S.Walsten
July in Wisconsin: hot or muggy or dry or stormy, or usually, a combination
of all four! Eating early sweet corn, running through the sprinkler, riding
bikes, and, perhaps, attending the Summer Recreation program , makes July
a great month for our kids. For grown ups (and kids), stopping at the Legion
Park shelter on 7/29 (7-9 pm) to attend the free Music Series is a relaxed
ending to a busy day. The Leichen Brothers, a big hit from last year, will
perform.
As I have stated before, I have been concerned about the flow of information
between the Village government and you, the residents, since we
discontinued mailing this newsletter because of costs. The village website
(www.BrooklynWI.gov) is being improved, especially making the
information current and correcting the problems. Please check it out each
month—the latest edition will be available by the third Monday.
Secondly, I am going to trial holding office hours the second and fourth
Wednesdays of each month at the Village Hall. The afternoon hours will be
1:30-3:30 pm and also in the evening from 6:30-7:30 pm and you are invited
to drop in. I occasionally have meetings on Wednesdays, and it would be
best to call the Village office 455-4201 or me (455-1457) if you wish to
confirm an appointment. My plans to hold listening sessions this past
winter were shelved by my accidents so I will be setting up those beginning
this fall.
As you know, this letter is dedicated to open and honest information—good
news and not so good news. Unfortunately, the Bluegrass Festival, our first
3 day festival, has lost a substantial amount of money, approximately $5100,
which has been a great disappointment. All of the pledged donations have
not been received and there is a possible source of funds dedicated to
bluegrass promotion that may be of help, however, the final balance will
most likely still be in the red. The Bluegrass Committee will be meeting on
7/20 and this will be our first opportunity to evaluate the Festival, including
the financials. I’m aware that attendance at festivals is down across all
venues, attributed to the depressed economy, however, we will have a better
understanding after 7/20 and will be addressing this shortfall with the Board
and our other sponsors. Stay tuned! (A bad pun, I know…)
